Cars entered in the Scout race must be newly built for this year’s Pinewood Derby using the kit provided by the pack. Cars that raced in previous Pinewood Derby events may not be reused or modified for entry.
The dimensions should be:
Wheel distance: Approximately 1.75” between the wheels
Overall Width: Not to exceed 2.75”
Overall Length: Not to exceed 7”
Overall Height: Not to exceed 4”
Chassis Clearance: 3/8” minimum is recommended to clear the track
Any car with less clearance will be checked with the pack provided go/no-go gauge
Overall Weight: Not to exceed 5 ounces (142 grams) – official scale is final
Weight Tips
You want the weight to be as close to 5oz as you can get, without going over!! Tungsten weights are the easiest and take up the least room but lead fishing weights will work too.
Pennies, coins, etc. are not good weights. They're just too lightweight and take up a lot of space!
Only dry lubricants (such as graphite) are allowed.
Liquid lubricants are not permitted.
On race day, graphite is provided by the pack and may be applied after each heat
All cars must pass inspection before racing.
Once checked in, cars cannot be modified unless approved by the race officials.
Race officials’ decisions are final.
Only race officials may handle cars once they are checked in.
Scouts may retrieve their cars after the race is complete.
If a car becomes damaged during the race, limited repairs may be made at the discretion of race officials.
Cars must still meet all rules after repair and are subject to re-inspection
Race officials may make minor adjustments to a car if it helps the scout participate safely.
Cars must be powered only by gravity.
No springs, rubber bands, magnets, motors, or other propulsion systems.
Cars must start behind the starting pin/gate.
Pinewood Derby is about fun, learning, and good sportsmanship.
Scouts are expected to cheer for all racers and treat others with respect.
Cars should be built primarily by the Scout with help from an adult.
There will be a Family and Friends heat(s) for any cars they want to enter. You will have to supply your own car!
For those extra cars, OR if you want a specific body type and don't have the tools to cut it out, OR for various weights, you can purchase all kinds of kits parts, and weights from basic to specialty body type at Hobby Lobby, the Scout Shop, or simply on Amazon.
Each Den will have a 1st and 2nd place trophy.
There will be a 1st and 2nd place over ALL.
